KOZLODUY NPP IS OPERATING IN ACCORDANCE WITH THE POWER GENERATION SCHEDULE

In light of the low water level of the Danube River, a special task force was promptly established at Kozloduy Nuclear Power Plant in early July 2026 to manage the situation. A programme developed for this purpose is being implemented, which includes all necessary measures to ensure the safe and reliable operation of the plant’s power units during a prolonged drop in river levels.
Constant communication is maintained with the Executive Agency “Exploration and Maintenance of the Danube River” regarding trends in water level changes.
The levels measured in recent days are at record lows for the past decades and are due to a series of heat waves and the reported minimal rainfall in Western and Central Europe where the major part of the river’s catchment area is located.
At the initiative of the Minister of Energy, Iva Petrova, contact was established with Serbia’s Minister of Mining and Energy, Dubravka Đedović, to seek cooperation within the technical capabilities of the “Ðerdap” hydropower complex to maintain the water level of the Danube River downstream of the Kozloduy Nuclear Power Plant above critical operating thresholds in order to ensure the safe and reliable operation of the plant. The “Ðerdap” hydropower complex, together with the hydropower system on the Romanian side, is operated in accordance with the provisions of the Convention on Exploitation signed in 1998 by the governments of Serbia and Romania, as well as under the terms specified in the water use permit.
The Ministry of Energy is in constant coordination with the Electricity System Operator.
Currently, the operating load of the two units of Kozloduy Nuclear Power Plant is in accordance with the power generation schedule.
The Danube River water is used to cool the steam in the condensers located in the conventional part of the plant, it is not used to cool the nuclear reactors.
Continuous water supply is ensured by the plant’s own bank pump station, built in a deep bay of the river and designed based on data from a century of studies of the Danube’s water level. This ensures stable operation of all facilities even when the river is at low levels. There is an automated system for continuous measurement in front of the bank pump station.
